New storage device made by glass has been invented and is being tested by Hitachi ,Japan.
A glass of 2 CM square which is only two millimeters thick ,and have 4 layers inside is able to store up to 40 MB per square inch now . Researchers from Hitachi say that they will be able to store more by adding more layers inside.
All of us have experiences of losing data stored on CDs,DVDs and even hard drives ,nothing found to be more reliable for our data, but of course this Quartz made glass storage would be . Hitachi claims that the data storage is durable for millions of years ,that really sounds great !
Hitachi researcher Kazuyoshi Torii said,
The prototype storage device is two centimeters (0.8 inches) square and just two millimeters (0.08 inches) thick and made from quartz glass, a highly stable and resilient material, used to make beakers and other instruments for laboratory use.
The chip, which is resistant to many chemicals and unaffected by radio waves, can be exposed directly to high temperature flames and heated to 1,000 degrees Celsius (1,832 Fahrenheit) for at least two hours without being damaged.
It is also waterproof, meaning it could survive natural calamities, such as fires and tsunami.
"We believe data will survive unless this hard glass is broken," said senior researcher Takao Watanabe.
The availability of the storage made by glass is expected in 2015 ,sources say.
